Castello Sforzesco
Mighty fortress, palace of Renaissance lords, seat of important collections of art, historical music instruments and a collection of forniture and modern design. Discover the castle you prefer at this unique location.
Join one of our guided tour to the Sforza Castle, the perfect place if you want to know the history of the city. It was started as a fortress by the Visconti family, the former lords of the city, later it became one of the most magnificent Renaissance palaces. Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante contributed to improve defences and to provide it with beautiful works of art.
In following centuries conquerors and world history protagonists like Charles the 5th and Napoleon had to deal with this mighty fortress. After centuries of sieges and use as a barrack for soldiers at the end of 19th century the Sforza Castle was one of the first and finest examples of historic restoration in Italy.
Today the huge red bricks bulk of the Castle, along with its massive towers has settled as one of the symbols of the city's landscape.
The halls of the castle, once residence of the lords of the city and walked by Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante, host the Castle's Museums. Here you can find great masterpieces like Leonardo da Vinci's Sala delle Asse, the largest painting ever made by the master, and the Pietà Rondanini, the last sculpture ever made by Michelangelo. We also remember the rich collections of decorative arts (ceramics, iron cast, wrought iron, tapestries and a unique collection of furniture). Not to forget to mention the precious collection of works of art with paintings from Mantegna, Lotto, Parmigianino and Filippo Lippi.
